Skellig may be an Old Norse word for courage or hope. He may be a combination of all three–or none of the above. Skellig may be an angel, or an owl, or a man. That tidbit is not revealed until we arrive on page 87–nearly halfway through the story. The passage does not tell us who Michael found in the garage-or that his name is Skellig. ĭavid Almond’s Skellig begins with a passage that contains the seeds of several essential elements of the story we are about to hear from its central character, Michael. The others were inside the house with Dr. Mum had said we’d be moving just in time for spring.
